Following the controversial banner displayed during the match in Southern Cyprus, Panathinaikos Head Coach Ergin Ataman made a statement, expressing his disappointment. The banner, which read "Bloody Cyprus Invasion by Turks," was unfurled by Panathinaikos fans during a friendly game against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Ataman reacted strongly, confronting the situation, and was eventually ejected from the game, which ended with an 88-75 victory for Maccabi.
In his post-match statement, Ataman emphasized that he had arrived in Southern Cyprus with the hope of fostering peace and friendship. He noted that the warm welcome he received at the airport had filled him with positive emotions, and the event was meant to contribute to sportsmanship and unity.
Ataman expressed his shock at seeing such a politically charged banner, which he felt was out of place in a sporting arena. He reiterated his belief that sports should bring people together, stating, "Sports venues are places for friendship and peace, not politics." He acknowledged the love and support he had received from local basketball fans and stressed that the actions of a small group wouldn't affect the bond he had with the wider community.
