Employers to Boycott Minimum Wage Commission Meeting

Highlighting that developments in various sectors differ and that the working environment in each sector is unique, the Employers’ Union emphasized the need for a sector-based minimum wage system.

They pointed out that while the Commission has repeatedly agreed on this system and political promises were made, the Sectoral Minimum Wage has yet to be implemented.

In their statement, the Employers' Union also mentioned that a previous decision was made allowing foreign workers from third countries, with work permits, to be employed at 20-50% below the minimum wage, provided there is mutual agreement between the employer and the employee. However, despite political promises, this decision has not been put into practice.

The statement also noted the increase in the gross minimum wage in the TRNC, which ranged around £400 between 2013 and 2022, rose to £600 in the 2022-2023 period, and exceeded £800 in 2024.
