Traffic Accidents Surge in the Past Week: 69 Accidents Result in 18 Injuries

In the last week, a total of 69 traffic accidents occurred in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), resulting in 18 injuries and causing damages exceeding 3 million TL. The primary cause of these accidents has been identified as speeding.

During the week, police conducted checks on nearly 16,500 drivers and issued reports for around 3,000 of them. Approximately 1,000 drivers were found to be speeding, and 340 vehicles were banned from the roads, with 11 drivers arrested.

SPEEDING LEADS AS THE MAIN CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS

According to a statement from the Police Press Office, between September 16 and September 22, there were 69 traffic accidents in the TRNC, of which 13 resulted in injuries while 56 caused material damage. Among the accidents, 21 were attributed to speeding, 15 to careless driving, 13 to failure to stop at intersections, 12 to tailgating, and 8 to other factors.

MATERIAL DAMAGES EXCEEDING 3 MILLION TL

The accidents incurred a total material damage of 3,128,000 TL. The majority of these incidents occurred in the following regions: 30 in Nicosia, 12 in Famagusta, 18 in Kyrenia, 4 in Omorfo, and 5 in Iskele.

OVER 1,000 SPEEDING DRIVERS REPORTED

Between September 16 and September 22, police conducted traffic inspections across the country, checking 16,420 vehicle drivers. Legal proceedings were initiated against 3,074 drivers for traffic violations. Among these, 942 were reported for speeding, and 75 were detected speeding by mobile units. Additionally, 19 drivers were found to be driving dangerously, and 62 were cited for careless driving.

ALCOHOL-RELATED VIOLATIONS AND OTHER INFRACTIONS

The inspections also revealed that 404 drivers were operating vehicles without valid registration, 15 were driving without a license, and 93 were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. Furthermore, 385 drivers were penalized for using their mobile phones while driving, and 100 drivers were cited for not wearing seat belts. Violations of traffic signs and signals were also noted, with 213 drivers failing to comply with road signs and 13 disregarding traffic lights.

340 VEHICLES BANNED FROM THE ROAD AND 11 ARRESTS MADE

Among the reported violations, 138 drivers were found to be operating vehicles without inspection, and 87 were using uninsured or improperly insured vehicles. Additional infractions included 59 drivers operating passenger transport without the proper "T" operating license, and 50 drivers using vehicles for personal cargo without the necessary "B" operating license. Furthermore, 43 drivers were reported for installing obstructive window films.

Other violations included 16 drivers riding motorcycles without helmets, 50 drivers failing to adhere to lighting regulations, and 385 drivers committing various other traffic offenses. In total, 340 vehicles were banned from the roads, and 11 drivers were arrested.
