Crime Rates in the TRNC Rise in 2023

According to a report obtained by Kıbrıs Postası, a total of 2,680 crimes were recorded in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in 2023.

Nicosia had the highest crime rate with 892 recorded offenses, followed by Kyrenia with 814. The report also revealed that three of the five murder victims were women, while two were men.

The report identified the female victims as Zehie Helin Reessur, Ayça Alav, and Kübra Aydın, while the male victims were Mikhail Kamyshanov and Hüseyin Mavideniz.

NICOSIA: THE CITY WITH THE HIGHEST CRIME RATE

Throughout 2023, Nicosia emerged as the region with the highest number of crimes, recording a total of 892 offenses. Among these, violent crimes, particularly assault and battery, were prevalent. Other common crimes included threats of violence, theft, and offenses against public peace.

KYRENIA FOLLOWS CLOSELY BEHIND

Kyrenia ranked second in terms of crime density, with a total of 814 recorded offenses. The majority of these were property crimes, including theft and burglary. Additionally, gambling-related crimes were notably high in Kyrenia, with a total of 119 cases reported.

FAMAGUSTA AND ISKELE: SIGNIFICANT CRIME RATES

In Famagusta, 460 crimes were recorded, with a notable prevalence of offenses against public peace, such as assault and disturbance. The Iskele region reported 277 crimes, with drug-related offenses being particularly significant.

OMORFO: THE REGION WITH THE LOWEST CRIME RATE

Omorfo recorded the lowest number of crimes, with a total of 237 offenses. While there were still notable incidents of crimes against public peace and property, the overall crime rate remained lower than in other regions.

CRIME DISTRIBUTION BY TYPE

The report showed a total of 10 incidents of homicide and attempted homicide. Assault and battery cases numbered 518. Theft was the most common property crime, with 428 incidents reported. Deliberate damage and trespassing were also prevalent in this category.

Gambling-related offenses were recorded 327 times across the country, with Kyrenia leading in this category at 119 cases.

INCREASE IN NARCOTIC CRIMES

Narcotic offenses emerged as another concerning category, with a total of 254 narcotic crimes detected in 2023. Nicosia reported the highest number of narcotic offenses at 75, followed by Kyrenia with 74 and Famagusta with 68.

SEXUAL CRIMES RAISE ALARM BELLS

The report also highlighted alarming statistics regarding sexual crimes. A total of 45 cases of sexual harassment were recorded, making it the most common type of sexual offense. Sexual exploitation cases numbered 7, while prostitution offenses were reported 18 times, all occurring in Nicosia.

OFFENSES AGAINST PUBLIC PEACE: DISTURBANCE CASES LEAD

Disturbance offenses were particularly common, with 257 cases recorded across the country. Defamation cases followed with 123 incidents, with Nicosia again having the highest rates in this category.

Overall, the 2023 data indicates a diverse range of crime rates in the TRNC, with Nicosia and Kyrenia standing out as the regions with the highest crime density.
