Özgür Özel Responds to Stefanou: "I Waited Outside Until His Speech Ended"
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel expressed his discontent with AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, who referred to the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation as an "occupation" during the Socialist International Presidents’ Meeting in New York. Özel, in response, stated, "I waited outside until his speech ended, then I entered, requested to speak, and addressed the Cyprus Peace Operation."
According to reports from ANKA, Özel, accompanied by a CHP delegation, initially left the room following Stefanou's comments but later returned to deliver a speech defending the operation. He recalled former Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit's stance, highlighting that the military action was intended to bring peace to both Turks and Greeks on the island.
Özel emphasized, "The operation was a political and military action, stopping after securing one-third of the island. If it had aimed to take the entire island, then it would have been an occupation."
After addressing the meeting, Özel clarified his actions in a message shared by journalist Barış Yarkadaş on TV100, explaining that he waited outside until Stefanou finished speaking before re-entering the room to present his remarks.
