The statement came after the U.S. announced that the arms embargo lift, first implemented in September 2020, would be extended for another year starting October 1, 2024. Turkey aligned itself with the TRNC’s views on the matter, as outlined by the TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that this "grave mistake" would increase militarization on the island and destabilize the delicate balance in the region. The ministry reiterated its belief that the TRNC would take every step necessary to strengthen its defense in the face of growing militarization by Southern Cyprus.
