"Erhürman was First to Challenge 'Invasion' Claims"
The aftermath of the recent meetings in New York during the UN General Assembly continues to reverberate. It has been reported that the first response to AKEL's reference to "occupation" came not from CHP leader Özgür Özel, who left the room, but from Erhürman, who urged Özel to also respond.
AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou stated at the Socialist International meeting that Cyprus was invaded by Turkey 50 years ago and that the occupation continues. Following his remarks, Erhürman took the floor to react to Stefanou's use of "invasion" and "occupation," asserting that if we are to discuss "occupation," we must acknowledge that the Republic of Cyprus has been under occupation since 1963.
Rights of Turkish Cypriots
Erhürman emphasized that Turkey's intervention on July 20, 1974, was a response to a coup aimed at Enosis and was carried out under the responsibility of protecting the state's and territorial integrity per the Guarantee Agreement. He insisted that if we are to speak of an occupation, it must be remembered that for 61 years, the state, contrary to the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, has been under the control of only Greek Cypriots, disregarding the rights of Turkish Cypriots, who are founding partners of the Republic.
