Erhürman on 'Occupation' Remark: The Term Has Never Been Part of CTP's Vocabulary
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman addressed comments made by AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, who referred to the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation as an "occupation" during the Socialist International's Executive Committee meeting in New York.
Speaking on Genç TV’s Er Meydanı program, Erhürman clarified that the word "occupation" has never been part of CTP's language.
Erhürman responded to allegations that he did not react to Stefanou’s remarks, explaining that the format of the meeting did not allow for immediate rebuttals, as each speaker had a limited time. However, after Stefanou’s comments, Erhürman stated that he requested the floor to respond.
“I do not like these kinds of discussions,” Erhürman said, “but if we are going to talk about occupation, I must remind everyone that since 1963, Turkish Cypriots have been excluded from the legislative, executive, and judicial bodies of the Republic of Cyprus, in violation of the Constitution. If there is talk of occupation, it is not something that was done by us. I reject this language because we are here to talk about peace.”
Erhürman also emphasized that CTP's stance has never involved the use of the term "occupation" and highlighted that this position has been consistent. He added that CHP leader Özgür Özel also responded to Stefanou during the meeting.
