Hasipoğlu: Arrests Lack Legal Basis, Aimed at Harming TRNC Economy

National Unity Party (UBP) Secretary General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu called on the Greek Cypriot Administration to comply with the decisions of the Immovable Property Commission (IPC), recognized as an effective legal remedy by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Hasipoğlu stated, "The arrests have no legal basis; their sole purpose is to harm the TRNC economy."

Speaking on behalf of the TRNC at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg, Hasipoğlu responded to claims made by Greek Cypriot MPs regarding recent arrests. He pointed out that Greek Cypriot MP Tornarides had questioned the effectiveness of the IPC and declared sales in the north as illegal. In response, Hasipoğlu emphasized that the ECHR acknowledges the IPC's decisions as part of an effective legal system, reminding member states that they are bound to adhere to the ECHR's rulings.

He criticized the arrests carried out by the Greek Cypriot side as politically motivated, with no legitimate legal grounds. Hasipoğlu argued that the Greek Cypriot administration's actions are designed to damage the TRNC economy. He further noted that while the Greek Cypriot side rejected previous peace plans, they now seek to undermine a functioning legal mechanism by politicizing the matter through personal criminal cases.

Hasipoğlu concluded by stressing the need for the TRNC to engage in stronger lobbying efforts on the issue, given the importance the Greek Cypriots have placed on these arrests as a national matter.
