Rights Protection Initiative is organizing a protest: Our goal is peace; we want development in peace

The Rights Protection Initiative is set to hold a demonstration in Metehan on Monday, October 14, aiming to reaffirm that the property issue can be resolved through the Immovable Property Commission (IPC). The planned protest will also highlight the attacks by the Greek Cypriot Government aimed at undermining the real estate sector.

Having previously raised awareness through press conferences and various meetings in London, Brussels, and Strasbourg, the Rights Protection Initiative will stage its action in front of the Metehan crossing point in Nicosia.

During the protest, scheduled for 11:00 AM on October 14, a statement will be read to United Nations and European Union officials, and participants are expected to carry banners reflecting the organizations' views on the attacks initiated by the Greek side using the property issue.

The organization’s officials emphasize, “Our goal is peace. We want development in peace. The rights of property owners, whether in the North or South, should be protected for the benefit of the people of Cyprus. Preventing this will only bring the two communities face-to-face and hinder a solution to the Cyprus problem.” They stressed that the messages conveyed during the protest would be peaceful and political.

Representatives of the initiative also highlighted the significance of choosing the Metehan crossing as the protest location, stating, “Since the opening of Metehan in 2003 and the increasing crossings between the two sides, we have witnessed the dismantling of hostilities and the establishment of new bridges between the two communities. We are determined not to allow the destruction of these bridges or the emergence of new tensions. We wish to express this determination to our friends on the Greek side in front of this crossing.”

The Rights Protection Initiative previously brought the property issue to the international community's attention with a press conference held in London on September 5, asserting that the issue could be resolved through the IPC. After the press conference, initiative representatives held discussions in Brussels and Strasbourg to contribute to the failure of the Greek side's attempts to abolish the IPC.

They assert that the Greek side's efforts will continue, and they will persist in opposing the arrests and attacks made by the Greek side while continuing to explain that the IPC is the only viable solution for the property issue and for protecting the rights of Greek Cypriots as former property owners.
