Hunger Threshold for a Family of Four: 27,144 TL
KTAMS President Güven Bengihan announced that, as of September 30, 2024, the hunger threshold for a family of four stands at 27,144 TL. Bengihan shared the union's calculations, which were based on data from the Ministry of Health's Directorate of Hospitalized Treatment Institutions and price averages from the Statistics Institute.
According to KTAMS' report, a family of four needs to spend 27,144 TL monthly to ensure healthy, balanced, and adequate nutrition. For an adult woman, the daily necessary food expenditure is 233 TL, amounting to 6,990 TL per month. For an adult man, it is 245.96 TL daily, or 7,378.80 TL per month. A 15-19-year-old child requires 257.22 TL daily, or 7,716.60 TL monthly, while a 4-6-year-old child's food cost is 171.23 TL per day, or 5,136.90 TL monthly.
Hunger Threshold Decreases
KTAMS noted a slight drop in the hunger threshold compared to the previous month. This decrease is attributed to lower food and non-alcoholic beverage prices, according to the Statistics Institute’s September bulletin. Despite this, the overall inflation rate for September was recorded at 2.53%.
Bengihan: Economic Conditions Still Challenge Citizens
Bengihan emphasized that despite the drop in food prices, the country’s economic conditions remain challenging for many. "Although there has been a decrease in food prices, high inflation and the overall economic conditions continue to severely impact citizens' daily lives. Thousands of families struggling below the hunger threshold find it difficult to meet their basic needs, which negatively affects the overall health of society," he stated.
