Harmancı Mocks Arıklı’s ‘Fool’s Mate’ with ‘Suffocation Mate’ Comment

In response to Minister of Transport Erhan Arıklı’s claim that the opposition failed strategically and was defeated by a "fool's mate" in the recent Parliamentary Speaker election, Mayor of Nicosia Turkish Municipality (LTB), Mehmet Harmancı, countered by suggesting that the correct term should be "suffocation mate."

A- A A+

Arıklı had previously used a chess metaphor, stating, "If you don’t know when to make your move, you’ll be checkmated. But fool’s mate is different; master players don’t fall for fool’s mate." Harmancı, however, questioned the accuracy of Arıklı’s analogy.

Referring to Arıklı’s comments, Harmancı said, "Since chess terms have come into play, describing the current situation as a ‘fool’s mate’ isn’t quite accurate."

Harmancı proposed that the term "suffocation mate," which occurs when a king is trapped by its own pieces and checkmated by a knight, would be more fitting for the ongoing political situation.

“Two Chess Terms Apply Here”

Sharing his thoughts on social media, Harmancı explained:

"Given that chess terms are being used, describing the current situation as a ‘fool’s mate’ is not the most appropriate.

In my opinion, there are two chess terms that could be used here:

The first is ‘Adjournment,’ when a game in a tournament cannot be completed within a set time and is postponed to another day.

But the most accurate term, in my view, is ‘Suffocation Mate.’

It’s when a king is trapped by its own pieces and checkmated by a knight.

I’ll leave it to you to interpret the roles of the king and the knight."
