Heavy Toll from Traffic Accidents: 2 Dead, 26 Injured

In the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), 82 traffic accidents occurred in just one week, resulting in the deaths of 2 people and injuries to 26 others.

According to the Police Press Bulletin, the traffic accidents that took place between September 30 and October 6 were primarily caused by speeding, careless driving, failure to stop at intersections, tailgating, and other factors.

Of the accidents reported, 32 occurred in Nicosia, 16 in Famagusta, 25 in Kyrenia, 7 in Omorfo, and 2 in Iskele, leading to damages amounting to 4,669,005 TL.

During this same period, the police conducted traffic inspections nationwide, checking 14,648 drivers and reporting 2,590 for violations. A total of 195 vehicles were removed from traffic, and 11 drivers were arrested.

The breakdown of offenses is as follows:

  • Speeding: 841
  • Speeding detected by mobile vehicle: 114
  • Dangerous driving: 21
  • Careless driving: 65
  • Driving an unregistered vehicle: 189
  • Driving without a license: 11
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: 87
  • Using a mobile phone while driving: 280
  • Driving without a seatbelt: 46
  • Failing to obey traffic signs and signals: 120
  • Running a red light: 70
  • Driving an uninspected vehicle: 63
  • Driving an uninsured vehicle: 54
  • Operating a vehicle for passenger transport without a license: 14
  • Operating a vehicle for private goods transport without a license: 17
  • Using window tint that obstructs visibility: 22
  • Riding a motorcycle without a helmet: 7
  • Violating light regulations or driving with insufficient lighting: 16
  • Other traffic offenses: 667
