Nami Criticizes Tatar’s Leadership, Expects No Progress from Negotiations
Former Foreign Minister, ex-MP, and former negotiator Özdil Nami expressed his doubts about the recent informal dinner in New York involving UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides.
Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV's "Gündem" program hosted by Ulaş Barış, Nami criticized Tatar's leadership, stating, "A new chapter has begun, but I do not attribute much to it. I do not expect any progress under Tatar's leadership. I do not see the capacity in him, nor do I see statesmanship."
Nami pointed out the broader implications of the negotiation process for other countries. He emphasized, "This is unprecedented. Such a situation never occurred during the terms of Rauf Raif Denktaş, Dr. Derviş Eroğlu, Mehmet Ali Talat, or Mustafa Akıncı." Nami added that a new framework for the future of the negotiations will be developed, and it will be addressed in an upcoming meeting involving other parties.
Referring to Turkey and Greece, Nami highlighted the uncertainty regarding whether the UK will participate and whether the EU will take on an observer role. Despite the informal nature of the talks, Nami described the process as a significant development that impacts both the Cyprus issue and other countries.
