Two Years of Illegal Residency: Zimbabwean Citizen Sent to Prison
Patience Shingirai Nyamande, a 27-year-old Zimbabwean national, has been sent to prison after it was discovered that she had been residing illegally in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) for two years. Nyamande was arrested for illegal residency and appeared before the court yesterday morning.
During the court hearing, police officer Nevzat Gün, who works in the Nicosia Judicial Branch, presented the facts of the case.
Officer Gün stated that on October 15, 2024, at approximately 8:00 PM, the defendant was found in the Küçükkaymaklı district of Nicosia, on Meşe Street. During an immigration check, it was discovered that Nyamande had been living in the TRNC illegally since March 26, 2022, totaling 934 days.
The police confirmed that Nyamande was arrested in the act of committing the crime.
Officer Gün further stated that all necessary statements had been obtained and the investigation was completed. He argued that if the defendant were released, she would likely continue to commit the same offense. Therefore, the police requested her to be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 20 days.
After hearing the testimony, the defendant expressed her desire to return to her home country.
Judge Nuray Necdet, after considering the evidence, ordered that the defendant be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 20 days.
