Murder Allegation in Haspolat: Suspects to Remain in Custody for 7 Days
Following an incident in Haspolat where items in an apartment building stairwell were set ablaze, resulting in one death and another person being seriously injured, the suspects will remain in custody for seven more days as the investigation continues. Suspects S.M.A.E (25), I.E.G (20), and M.T (42) were brought back to Nicosia District Court after a day in custody.
The court ordered that the suspects, charged with “Murder, Arson, Setting Fire to Building Contents, and Serious Injury,” be held in police custody for an additional seven days.
During the hearing before Judge Nuray Cevdet, Prosecutor Şayan Ergülen represented the Attorney General's Office, while Çağdaş Par represented suspects S.M.A.E and M.T. Suspect I.E.G appeared without representation.
INVESTIGATION OFFICER
Investigation Officer Inspector Ömer Faruk Şengil stated that the suspects were charged with murder, arson, setting fire to building contents, and causing serious injury. Şengil explained that, at approximately 2:40 am, suspects S.M.A.E and I.E.G entered an apartment building owned by suspect M.T, setting fire to items inside with flammable materials. The resulting fire led to the death of Derrick Bamfo Ampomah, 24, and caused serious injuries to Jonathan Maukle Adjabeng, 24.
Şengil added that suspect M.T, believed to be connected to the incident, was also detained, and noted that S.M.A.E and I.E.G had given voluntary statements while M.T provided a formal statement.
ONGOING INVESTIGATION
Şengil reported that over 30 statements have been collected as part of the investigation, with extensive camera footage to be reviewed and additional statements to be obtained. Searches were conducted at the suspects' homes, and mobile phones were seized as evidence. Şengil noted that S.M.A.E’s encrypted phone remains inaccessible after the suspect, through his lawyer, refused to provide the password.
To ensure the investigation proceeds smoothly, Şengil requested the suspects remain in police custody for another seven days.
DEFENSE
Defense attorney Çağdaş Par, representing suspects S.M.A.E and M.T, did not object to the extended custody. Par questioned whether any evidence had been found against M.T, who denies the charges, and inquired whether S.M.A.E had undergone a medical examination. Şengil confirmed that the suspect was examined and showed no signs of assault or coercion.
Following the evidence presented, the judge ordered the suspects to remain in custody for seven more days.
