Erhürman: We Will Continue to Defend Democracy

Erhürman outlined his stance as follows:

  1. "Who requested the opinion of the three legal experts in Parliament? It wasn’t CTP—it was the Parliamentary Speaker.

  2. The three legal experts provided their written opinions to the Speaker on October 22.

  3. All three legal experts in Parliament stated that 'double-stamped' votes are invalid. This would mean Mr. Öztürkler received 23 votes for and 23 against in the final round, which means he was not elected.

  4. The three legal experts also advised that the Parliamentary Council should convene under these circumstances.

  5. What did the government do upon learning this on October 22? Without even convening the Council and despite the unanimous opposition from the legal experts, they published a 'decision' on October 23 in the Official Gazette declaring Mr. Öztürkler elected. Furthermore, Mr. Öztürkler assumed office."

Erhürman criticized those asking CTP to accept what he termed an 'imposed' result, describing it as an affront to democracy and the rule of law. "We will remain in Parliament, defending it, democracy, and the rule of law. Let it be known that the opinions of those urging us to ignore these violations and carry on as if nothing happened are as void to us as the status of the 'new Parliamentary Speaker.'"
