Levent Özadam writes..."Warning to CTP Over Deputy Speaker Election"
Kıbrıs Postası columnist Levent Özadam writes about the latest rumors about the parliamen's unfinished elections...
Despite widespread exhaustion over the recent events surrounding the Parliamentary Speaker election, it appears the Deputy Speaker election may soon follow suit, with significant contention expected.
According to reports, key meetings were held within UBP yesterday, centering on CTP’s stance and statements, as well as the upcoming Deputy Speaker election.
While CTP has already announced its candidate for the role, recent protests outside parliament advocating for democracy and rule of law have noticeably unsettled the government.
Rumor has it that UBP officials will hold a final meeting with CTP representatives today. If an agreement is reached, so be it; if not, UBP and its coalition partners have a backup plan.
In yesterday's discussions, UBP reportedly considered putting forth its own Deputy Speaker candidate, exploring the legality of such a move, which has precedent.
Observers are now curious about the opposition’s response, especially from CTP and civil society organizations. The government aims to restore parliamentary functionality and begin budget discussions without delay.
Two candidates, including a likely female MP, are already shortlisted, with the final decision pending from the Prime Minister.
On a broader note, public attention is shifting to the muted responses from the opposition and its supporters.
Civil society organizations, particularly unions, are under scrutiny for their limited action.
While they formally support the demonstrations outside parliament, their involvement remains minimal, fueling public speculation about potential complacency.
For any impactful action, larger and more resolute participation is expected.
