Erhürman: "This Mindset Won't Produce Any Results"
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Leader Tufan Erhürman criticized the recent parliamentary speaker election, claiming that despite knowing ballots with multiple seals were invalid, the government still published the decision in the Official Gazette.
Speaking on Morning Post, hosted by Gökhan Altıner on Cyprus Post TV, Erhürman remarked, “This mindset won’t lead to anything useful. You and I cannot comprehend the mentality of these people.”
Responding to recent remarks from Ersin Tatar, who had warned him with, "Everyone should watch their actions and words; they'll answer for them," Erhürman replied, “In democracy, accountability is shown at the ballot box.”
Highlighting the legal controversies and their impact on parliamentary credibility, Erhürman argued the speaker election should be repeated. He criticized the government’s insistence on Ziya Öztürkler's legitimacy as parliamentary speaker, pointing out that the views of three legal experts in parliament, declaring certain ballots invalid, were disregarded despite being published. “CTP’s stance is clear; appointing a speaker through legal violations is unacceptable,” he emphasized.
Calls for Early Elections and Legal Compliance
Erhürman underlined that the secrecy of the vote had been violated, which goes against democratic principles. “The opinions of three legal experts invalidated three ballots. Secret voting and open counting are essentials of democracy,” he added, urging for early elections as the solution. Addressing Turkey-Cyprus relations, Erhürman said such relations should be maintained on the right terms.
"Let Mr. Tatar Face Me and Explain"
Erhürman reiterated that “democratic results cannot emerge from this mindset,” once again calling for early elections. He condemned the government’s disregard for legal procedures, saying, “Despite three legal experts declaring the ballots invalid, Ziya Öztürkler proceeded with the handover. This damages the parliament’s reputation, and the election must be completed properly.”
In response to Tatar's remarks, Erhürman challenged him, saying, “I’m ready anytime, come face me and explain. In democracy, accountability is at the ballot box.”
