2 Years, 6 Months Imprisonment for Fatal Accident on Dark Road
Taşkın Karaman, the defendant in a fatal accident in Nicosia on March 24, 2016, has been sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison.
The judge noted that the road was dark, lacked street lighting and pedestrian crossings, and the victim wore dark clothing. Karaman was found guilty on eight charges in the Nicosia High Criminal Court, including "causing death by negligence."
The accident occurred at 9:20 p.m. when Karaman, driving a vehicle with license plate FJ 560, struck and killed pedestrian Fabiola Grace Mave. Judge Vedia Berkut Barkın, presiding over the case, highlighted the increase in fatal accidents, emphasizing the distress caused to the community.
The court noted that the road lacked adequate lighting and pedestrian crossings, and Karaman was traveling over the speed limit, failing to see the pedestrian from 41 meters and stopping 100 meters after the impact. Despite his clean driving record and efforts to remain at the scene and contact the police, Karaman was penalized for driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle.
The judge pointed to poor road lighting as a significant factor contributing to traffic accidents, underscoring public anxiety over the rise in fatalities on the roads.
