Veterinary Association Clarifies Blue Tongue Disease: No Risk in Meat and Dairy Consumption
The Cyprus Turkish Veterinary Association (KTVHB) reassured the public regarding Blue Tongue disease, stating there is no health risk in consuming meat and dairy products.
Association President Dr. Burak Toksoy emphasized that the disease, which recently affected small livestock, does not transmit to humans and poses no food safety concerns.
"Blue Tongue disease is not zoonotic, so it cannot infect humans," Toksoy explained, adding that according to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), there has been no recorded case of Blue Tongue spreading to humans through direct contact or animal products.
Quarantine Measures for Suspected Cases
Toksoy noted that any suspected cases are quarantined by the Veterinary Department to prevent animal movement, ensuring no breeding or sale of possibly infected livestock. Only animals deemed healthy following veterinary examination are permitted for sale.
Role of Abattoirs and Authorities
Highlighting the importance of safe food production, Toksoy stressed that all abattoirs must operate under Veterinary Department licensing; however, most municipal abattoirs currently lack such licenses and operate under unsanitary conditions. Over the last five years, six abattoirs have been shut down, yet remaining facilities are still undergoing corrective measures.
Compensation for Livestock Losses
The association also suggested revising compensation for animals lost to Blue Tongue. Toksoy recommended adjusting compensation based on the animal’s species and age, rather than weight alone, to better support affected farmers.
Supporting measures that protect public health, Toksoy urged authorities to address any deficiencies in disease prevention and food safety regulations, advocating for corrective actions and enforcement to maintain public confidence.
