Özyiğit: Everything Will Be Discussed Without Labels
Cemal Özyiğit, the former leader of the Social Democracy Party (TDP) and a former Minister of Education, stated that discussions regarding the Cyprus issue will continue without labels. Criticizing President Ersin Tatar, Özyiğit emphasized the need for Tatar to be self-reliant and not rely on Ankara.
In an interview with Kıbrıs Postası, Özyiğit highlighted the importance of dialogue and negotiations, asserting, "Everyone should be prepared; everything will be discussed without labels." He remarked that discussions would be more flexible and comprehensive and insisted that Tatar should not lean on Ankara for support.
Necessity of a Dialogue Environment for Cyprus's Future
Özyiğit stressed the importance of recognizing the will of the Turkish Cypriot people and advancing dialogues in line with public expectations. He stated that creating a conducive environment for dialogue is essential for the future of Cyprus, urging all parties to engage in sincere and constructive communication.
Reflecting on past challenges, Özyiğit emphasized that clear and direct communication among parties would play a critical role in overcoming issues. "Every segment must be part of this process. Both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots should listen to each other to build a shared future," he stated.
Youth Must Unite for a Peaceful Future
Özyiğit underscored the importance of active youth participation, asserting that young people must unite in their efforts to build a peaceful future and seek non-violent solutions rather than conflict.
Lastly, he reiterated that any steps taken to resolve the Cyprus issue must involve public participation, asserting, "No decision can be permanent without the voice of the people. Everyone must take responsibility and assert their will in this process."
Tatar Cannot Rely on Ankara
Özyiğit criticized Tatar's stance on the Cyprus issue, comparing him to Rauf Denktaş, who had previously claimed he wouldn't go to Gönyeli but eventually engaged in federal negotiations. He cautioned that Tatar might face similar circumstances in the future.
Continuing his criticism, Özyiğit urged Tatar to trust in himself and embark on a new path, stating, "Relying on Ankara is not sufficient; it is not enough to say, 'Ankara wants me.' First, he must instill confidence in the people and gain their support."
A Call for Genuine and Constructive Dialogue
Özyiğit reminded that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will meet with the Greek Foreign Minister in Athens on November 8, emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriots have persistent concerns that must be addressed until guarantees are established. He underscored that creating a secure environment is crucial for the resolution process regarding the Cyprus issue.
He concluded by urging all parties to engage in sincere and constructive dialogue, stating that both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots should seek ways to live peacefully together.
