CTP Initiates "Legitimate Session" Against "Civil Coup"
The Republican Turkish Party (CTP), in protest against what it calls a “civil coup,” began a “legal session” under the chair of the legitimate Deputy Speaker, Fazilet Özdenefe. Özdenefe convened the General Assembly with an agenda to elect the Parliament Speaker, but MPs from the UBP, Re-Birth Party (YDP), and DP did not attend. With the lack of a quorum, a 10-minute recess was called, while Parliament TV’s broadcast was abruptly cut.
Özdenefe noted that the last legitimate session occurred on October 18, resuming the session by stating, “Today we are reopening the session following the October 18 adjournment,” while amending records to reflect this as the 8th session. After calling the opposition MPs into the hall, Özdenefe commented on the broadcast disruption, saying, “If Parliament TV has indeed cut the broadcast, they are legally required to continue it.”
CTP Group Deputy Chair Erkut Şahali remarked, “The coup plotters have lost control to the point of intervening in BRT’s broadcast.” CTP leader Tufan Erhürman criticized UBP MP Ziya Öztürkler, whom he said instructed parliamentary staff not to attend the session. Erhürman reiterated that Özdenefe is the sole lawful authority in parliament, noting that Speaker Töre had resigned legitimately. He emphasized that Öztürkler’s orders were legally void and called on MPs to join in opposing the “unlawful commands” and support Özdenefe’s session.
