Öztürkler: “Legal Opinions Don’t Make It Illegal”
Ziya Öztürkler, the UBP MP declared "Speaker of Parliament" by the UBP-YDP-DP government despite invalid votes, stated that "legal opinions don't create illegality."
Speaking at the Blue Hall in Parliament, Öztürkler dismissed assessments from parliamentary legal experts and a former High Court President deeming the votes invalid, stating, “Opinions don’t decide legality; courts do. Claims become legitimate when proven.”
The UBP-YDP-DP MPs, who refused to attend the General Assembly convened by Deputy Speaker Fazilet Özdenefe, instead gathered in the Blue Hall, declining press questions and telling reporters, "We’re not taking questions."
Öztürkler contended that the opposition’s characterization of the speaker election as unlawful was merely an opinion, asserting, “Until a court rules otherwise, claims of illegality are just opinions, not facts.” He maintained that he and 29 MPs were ready to open and operate Parliament, insisting that “the authority is present here.”
The election, in which Öztürkler was declared “Speaker” but not formally elected, saw ballots invalidated by parliamentary legal advisors and former High Court and Supreme Electoral Council heads as “invalid.”
