"Effort to Legitimise Separatist Entity"
The invitation extended to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as an "observer" at the summit held by the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in Kyrgyzstan has caused unease within the European Union (EU). The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member, opposed the invitation, and Brussels did not remain silent in its response.
Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, sharply criticized the invitation, deeming it an "attempt to legitimize a separatist entity." In a written statement on November 7, Borrell stated, "The European Union rejects the repeated attempts by OTS to legitimize the so-called 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,' an unrecognized separatist entity, by granting it observer status at events such as the summit in Bishkek."
Borrell emphasized that these actions were "regrettable" and violated the principle of Cyprus' territorial integrity enshrined in the United Nations Charter. He reiterated that the EU recognizes only the Republic of Cyprus.
According to the Republic of Cyprus, the EU member representing the legal interests of the island in the international arena, Turkey is using OTS as a platform to promote the unrecognized state of the TRNC.
