Erhürman: 'We Will Not Retreat from Democracy'
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman addressed the recent tensions in Parliament, emphasizing the party's unwavering commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
He criticized the scuffles in Parliament, stating that disputes should be resolved through dialogue. "Dialogue began on Saturday evening," Erhürman said, adding, "We outlined a framework based on democracy and the supremacy of law. The convening of the Budget Committee was crucial. Our goal was not to disrupt the budget but to ensure Parliament operates legally and procedurally."
'We Will Not Accept This Imposition'
Erhürman noted that the budget committee could not function as the parliamentary session had not been formally closed and that CTP proposed a solution: "We suggested pausing the debate over the Speaker and initiating dialogue to prevent hindrance to the budget committee's work. We were open to discussing alternative suggestions, but our proposal was rejected, and a forced attempt to start the session was made." He highlighted that Ziya Öztürkler had not been elected as Speaker, calling this unlawful and unacceptable for Parliament. He warned that a Parliament acting against the law loses its legitimacy and shifts toward a police state model.
"Our struggle is a legal battle against an unelected individual occupying the Speaker’s chair," Erhürman stated, affirming that CTP would not back down from defending democracy and the rule of law. He concluded, "We do not share the same understanding of democracy and law as those who believe CTP should turn a blind eye. We will not accept this imposition."
