Kılıç Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Injuring Two with Machete
Mehmet Kılıç, who injured two individuals with a machete in Nicosia, was sentenced to five years in prison. Kılıç, who was facing charges of grievous bodily harm, assault, malicious damage, carrying a dangerous weapon, and serious injury, was convicted by the Nicosia Criminal Court.
The court panel, consisting of President Füsun Cemaller, Senior Judge Vedia Berkut Barkın, and Judge Tutku Candaş, unanimously delivered the verdict, which was read by Judge Candaş.
According to the court, the incident took place in February 2024 at around 1:30 p.m. in Nicosia. Kılıç struck M.G. on the back of the head with a 35-centimeter-long machete, causing a 7-centimeter cut. The defendant then threw the machete at I.C., causing a broken tooth and a 4-centimeter cut on his lower right lip.
The court also noted that Kılıç intentionally damaged M.G.'s phone by throwing it on the ground, resulting in a loss of 4,400 TL. Kılıç was arrested in Demirhan on the same day.
At the time of his arrest, Kılıç claimed that a conspiracy had been set up against him and stated that he remembered nothing of the incident. The court further revealed that Kılıç had a history of convictions for assault, carrying dangerous weapons, and other violent crimes, including breaking and entering, kidnapping, serious assault, sexual harassment, threats of violence, and phone harassment.
In his defense, Kılıç's lawyer argued that he had been under the influence of drugs, which impaired his ability to think clearly and contributed to his aggressive behavior. Despite these claims, the court found Kılıç guilty on all charges.
The judge emphasized the increasing prevalence of violent crimes such as assault, injury, and grievous bodily harm, stressing the importance of imposing deterrent sentences. Kılıç was sentenced to five years in prison for the charges he faced.
