UBP District Heads Criticize CTP: Öztürkler Elected by Parliamentary Majority
Six district heads of the National Unity Party (UBP) criticized the Republican Turkish Party's (CTP) stance in the Republic's Assembly, stating that the disrespect shown toward Parliamentary Speaker Ziya Öztürkler and attempts to disrupt proceedings were inconsistent with democratic principles.
In a joint statement addressing recent tensions in the Assembly, the UBP district heads accused the CTP of escalating its aggressive politics and heightening tensions during General Assembly sessions. They emphasized that the conduct directed at Speaker Öztürkler could not be justified as mere political dissent and highlighted that efforts to paralyze the Assembly were anti-democratic.
The statement reiterated that Speaker Ziya Öztürkler was elected by the will of the parliamentary majority and continued to serve in his position. It urged those seeking legal recourse without considering procedural rules to remember the electoral mandate before resorting to attacks on the speaker's podium.
Additionally, the statement underlined the urgent economic measures that Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s government needs to implement for the Turkish Cypriot people and called on the CTP to act with prudence.
