Basın-Sen: Attack on Journalist Unacceptable
The Press Workers’ Union (Basın-Sen) condemned the verbal assault on journalist Pınar Barut during a demonstration by the youth wing of the National Unity Party (UBP), emphasizing that the right of press workers to defend democratic principles cannot be impeded.
In a statement, Basın-Sen criticized the incident as an unjust attempt to suppress Barut for rejecting statements that incite hatred, calling such a response unacceptable.
Basın-Sen also addressed recent developments in the Parliamentary General Assembly, accusing the UBP of inciting public outrage through "victimhood narratives." The statement described the slogans at the protest as "dangerous rhetoric that targets individuals," asserting that press workers fulfilling their duty to inform the public should not be subjected to attacks for rejecting divisive language.
The union stressed that journalists are not obligated to show tolerance to those who undermine freedom of thought and expression. Additionally, Basın-Sen expressed disapproval over the exclusion of questions during a press conference in Parliament.
