UN Prepares for Informal Meeting Agreed by Two Leaders in New York
The United Nations is in the final stages of preparing an informal extended meeting under the auspices of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, following the agreement reached during the informal dinner between the two leaders on October 16 in New York, Alithia reported.
According to the newspaper, based on sources, discussions are ongoing to determine the format of this extended informal meeting, which is expected to be a 4+1 format with the participation of the UK as an observer. The report suggests that the UK may participate at the level of the Deputy Minister for European Affairs.
Alithia noted that the informal dinner in New York concluded with ambiguity over the structure of the expanded informal meeting. While references were made to an extended meeting, the composition remained unclear, unlike previous instances.
The paper highlighted that interpretations regarding participants have varied, with President Ersin Tatar suggesting a 4+1 format, whereas Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides has mentioned a 5+1 meeting.
Additionally, various Greek Cypriot media outlets indicated late November to early December as a potential timeframe for the informal meeting.
