Derya Explains Water Throwing Incident in Parliament

CTP MP Doğuş Derya provided an explanation regarding the incident where he threw water at Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler, stating, "I told him to get up, or there would be a scuffle; he refused, so I threw water." He clarified that the action was prompted by Öztürkler’s refusal to vacate the Speaker’s chair during a tense situation.

Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası, Derya also pointed out that former High Court President Narin Şefik and many other legal experts had declared the Speaker's election invalid, calling the process a "coup." He stated that Öztürkler had been installed as Speaker through undemocratic means, and it was a violation of the people's will. He emphasized that the CTP’s goal was not to obstruct the budget but to ensure a meaningful debate on it.

The CTP MP further criticized the government for its failures in governance, including incompetent appointments, a series of avoidable infant deaths, excessive work hours for medical staff, and a shortage of drugs in oncology departments. Derya accused the ruling party, UBP, of creating widespread damage through mismanagement over the years.

He also discussed the recent crisis over the parliamentary Speaker’s election, highlighting that the initial nomination of Faiz Sucuoğlu was changed at the last minute to Zorlu Töre, who was later hospitalized due to health issues. Derya stressed that such actions were an attempt to "steal the people’s will," and it was crucial to restore that will back to the public.

Additionally, Derya pointed out the hypocrisy of those who criticized the CTP’s actions in Parliament, stating that the people who failed to manage the country are now attempting to manipulate public opinion. He specifically addressed the controversial remarks by UBP General Secretary Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, who claimed that having dual stamps was a form of political power. Derya argued that such behavior eroded public trust in the Parliament.

The CTP MP also reacted to the UBP Youth Organization’s provocative actions when the CTP Youth Organization gathered in front of Parliament, noting that his party’s youth remained calm and refrained from being provoked. He condemned the attempt to assault journalist Pınar Barut, claiming the attack was due to her refusal to accept the label "terrorist."

Derya criticized the government for attempting to create a culture of fear and manipulation among the public, warning against the dangers of mass mobilization for the benefit of a few individuals. He called on the public to resist becoming pawns in these games, which, according to him, were designed to serve narrow interests.

Reflecting on the political climate, Derya remarked, "When Faiz Sucuoğlu was removed from his position, no one marched. When babies died or children were confined to container schools, no one marched." He concluded by stating, "I see the process we are experiencing as a sociological study. The Turkish Cypriots are ending their relationship with Ersin Tatar."
