Nine Unions Demand Legal Selection of Parliamentary Speaker
Nine unions issued a joint statement demanding that the Parliamentary Speaker be selected "in accordance with the law." The unions, including HÜR-İŞ, DEV-İŞ, KTAMS, KAMU-SEN, KTÖS, KTOEÖS, KOOP-SEN, EL-SEN, and BES, called for a lawful and transparent process regarding the election.
In a written statement made by KTAMS on behalf of the unions, the unions expressed concern that the events surrounding the Parliamentary Speaker election process, which began on October 8, 2024, threatened the fundamental principles of the Constitution. They criticized the UBP-DP-YDP government, which has 29 members of parliament, for holding 15 rounds of voting with three candidates and failing to elect a Speaker, while also allowing three double-stamped votes to be counted as valid.
The statement accused the government of disregarding "parliamentary will, the constitution, and the laws." It further stated, “The insistence of the ruling coalition of UBP-DP-YDP to ignore democracy and the rule of law, along with the opposition's resistance to this, has led to increased tension in the parliament and the occurrence of unpleasant events.”
