Christodoulides: NATO Membership Plan Hinges on Political Developments

According to Kathimerini, President Christodoulides discussed the idea during a recent meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, emphasizing the need for favorable political conditions for Cyprus to consider NATO membership. The newspaper described the plan as a well-structured, multi-phase approach supported by Washington.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan reportedly described the plan as a “win-win” and highlighted its potential for significant progress. The proposal had previously been presented to former U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, with its first step focusing on institutionalizing ties between Cyprus and NATO.

The report indicated that Cyprus’ pathway to NATO membership hinges on a sequence of developments, including positive steps on the Cyprus issue and advancements in EU-Turkey relations. The Cypriot government has also outlined three strategic objectives for U.S. support in this process:

1. Procuring defense equipment from the United States.
2. Facilitating the training of Cypriot National Guard officers in the U.S.
3. Modernizing military infrastructure and capabilities in line with NATO standards.

The government acknowledges potential obstacles and opposition but sees these objectives as critical steps toward deeper integration with NATO structures. The article also noted that U.S. Senator Mark Rubio, a potential future Secretary of State, is well-versed in the dynamics of the region and supports strengthening ties with the Israel-Greece-Cyprus partnership.
