Retired Police Officers Demand Adequate Funding for Police in 2025 Budget
The Retired Police Association of the TRNC has called for sufficient funding for police in the 2025 budget, emphasizing the critical role officers play in protecting the public and the state amid rising and diversifying crime rates.
In a statement, Association President Birol Atasü described it as “shameful” that the staffing levels mandated by a 1984 law have not been reached in nearly 40 years. He stressed the need for budget allocations and legislative reforms to enable the police force to operate more effectively.
The statement highlighted challenges such as population growth, increased crossing point activity, and deficiencies in traffic and road safety projects, which have left police officers overstretched and strained.
"The resumption of parliamentary work to address internal issues and the upcoming 2025 budget is encouraging for our community," the statement read. "However, we urge the authorities to address the severe staffing shortages within the police force, as officers face assaults, reckless drivers, and insults from criminal elements while demonstrating exceptional dedication."
The association warned that without action, the opening of new crossing points and major projects, such as the new Parliament building, will place unbearable strain on the police force.
Noting that rising crime rates are partly due to outdated laws emboldening offenders, the association called for a new legislative framework. This reform should address police personnel rights and incorporate the input of the Police Department.
The statement concluded, "We remind political leaders that our police are not without support. We will closely follow this matter and ensure it receives the attention it deserves."
