Özersay Calls for Transparency on Foreign Currency Seized at Famagusta Port
The leader of the People's Party (HP), Kudret Özersay, has called for the public to be informed about an ongoing investigation regarding foreign currency seized at Famagusta Port. He emphasized the detrimental effects of money laundering on both the national economy and social morality.
Özersay urged the General Police and the Ministry of Finance to release information on the investigation, stressing that such transparency is essential in a democratic rule of law, as long as it does not impede the integrity of the inquiry.
In a written statement, Özersay warned about the social and economic issues caused by illicit financial activities, often linked to "dirty money" and called on the authorities to address the worsening economic conditions in the country, such as the soaring prices of housing and vehicles, which have further diminished the purchasing power of the middle class and low-income citizens.
He claimed that a significant amount of foreign currency had been seized from a ship arriving at Famagusta Port, and reported that the Financial Police were involved in the case. Özersay suggested that these developments point to the circulation of serious amounts of laundered money within the country.
Özersay’s statement highlighted the negative impacts of such illicit financial flows, which not only lead to an economic collapse but also foster social problems, including increased inequality and lawlessness. He also reminded the public that the illegal money often originates from serious criminal activities, such as human trafficking, arms smuggling, and the drug trade.
Özersay concluded by stressing the need for a planned and comprehensive fight against money laundering, warning that the consequences of ignoring this issue could lead to further societal and economic problems.
