TDP’s Özkunt Warns: “Workers’ Strength Will Shake the Parliament”
Social Democratic Party (TDP) Secretary-General Nevzat Özkunt criticized a proposed amendment to the Collective Bargaining Agreement law, which recently passed a parliamentary subcommittee, warning that such a move could provoke an intense backlash.
In a written statement, Özkunt accused the amendment of undermining the constitutional rights protected through collective bargaining agreements, which safeguard workers' rights negotiated between unions and employers.
“The proposed change threatens to dismantle the foundation of democracy by disregarding agreements made with unions and undermining workers’ protections,” he stated.
Özkunt emphasized that all groups supporting unionization and workers’ organization would not allow existing rights to be eroded. He added that while the amendment has passed the committee, its progression to Parliament remains uncertain.
“Workers’ sweat and hard-earned rights are protected by collective agreements. Attempts to weaken them have been made before. Let this be a warning: if you try again, the storm it will unleash will be as unrelenting as the recent Parliamentary Speaker crisis. Workers’ strength will make that Parliament unbearable for you,” Özkunt declared.
