Erhürman: Kişmir's Trial Is a Threat to the Press and Citizens
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Leader Tufan Erhürman commented on the trial of journalist Ali Kişmir, who is set to be prosecuted under a provision of the Military Crimes Law that could result in a 10-year prison sentence. Erhürman stated that this trial is a threat to the entire press and citizens, specifically regarding freedom of expression.
Speaking during ongoing budget discussions in the General Assembly, Erhürman addressed the issue of Kişmir's trial and the restrictive laws that led to it. He reminded the assembly that, on August 29, 2023, CTP had proposed amendments to the Criminal Code and Military Crimes Law to protect freedom of the press and expression. The proposal was approved for urgent review on October 3, 2023, but has yet to be discussed a year later.
Erhürman criticized the delay, saying, “What does urgent review mean? It means it should be discussed immediately. But it still hasn't been addressed. The aim is to ensure that freedom of thought and expression, which is an integral part of our people’s character, is not undermined from above.”
The Threat of Legal Action
Erhürman further emphasized that the trial, regardless of its outcome, sends a clear message to the public and the press: “If you speak out, you may face lengthy legal battles.” He stated that the case is intended not just for Kişmir but to intimidate others, creating a chilling effect on freedom of expression.
“The law may not succeed in its aims, but it sends a message: ‘If you speak out, we can drag you through lengthy trials,’” Erhürman explained. “This is what poisons democracy and freedom. The judiciary waits, while the press and citizens live in fear.”
Erhürman also criticized the current environment, where even social media users and journalists are affected by the uncertainty and fear of prolonged legal proceedings, describing the situation as unacceptable.
