Hasipoğlu: "Cyprus Cannot Be Sacrificed for the Greek Cypriot Leader’s Image Campaign"
General Secretary of the National Unity Party (UBP), Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, criticized the Greek Cypriot administration's NATO membership efforts, stating, "Cyprus cannot be sacrificed for the Greek Cypriot leader’s image campaign."
Hasipoğlu accused Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides of pursuing NATO membership at the risk of endangering the island’s stability. He emphasized the importance of Turkey's effective guarantees and condemned efforts to sideline the Turkish Cypriot community.
“Christodoulides is recklessly turning Cyprus into a powder keg under the guise of foreign policy moves aimed at saving his image,” Hasipoğlu said, urging the U.S. and the Greek Cypriot administration to reconsider such steps.
He also remarked on Christodoulides’ recent meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, suggesting that the Greek Cypriot leader’s reliance on shifting U.S. political dynamics was shortsighted. “After Biden, Christodoulides finds himself caught off guard again, especially with the possibility of a Trump victory. Despite this, he continues to recklessly push for NATO membership, risking the island’s future,” Hasipoğlu concluded.
