Sharp Increase in Criminal Cases: 18,000 More Files in One Year
The number of criminal case files in the TRNC has surged by 18,000 in a single year, rising from approximately 30,000 last year to nearly 48,000 this year, according to data obtained by Kıbrıs Postası.
The significant jump in case numbers highlights a major escalation in criminal activity within just one year. Experts attribute this rise to factors such as economic challenges, unemployment, deepening social issues, an increasing uncontrolled population, and inadequate oversight.
Strain on Police Resources
The growing number of criminal cases has intensified pressure on the police force, which is reportedly operating at only 70% of its staffing capacity. Compounding this issue, the police budget’s share in the overall state budget has decreased this year, raising concerns about how the additional workload will be managed with limited resources.
Call for Comprehensive Measures
Experts emphasize the need for a thorough analysis to identify the underlying causes of rising crime rates and develop effective solutions. Calls have been made for bolstering police manpower and funding, alongside implementing social rehabilitation and education programs to address the broader social issues driving the increase in crime.
