Former Mayor Sentenced to 16 Years for Earthquake-Related Deaths
In a case related to the collapse of a building during the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes, which claimed 26 lives in Nurdağı district, former Nurdağı Mayor Ökkeş Kavak and four other defendants received 16 years and 3 months in prison. Two additional defendants were sentenced to 7 years and 6 months.
The verdict was delivered by the Gaziantep İslahiye Heavy Penal Court, where defendants and their lawyers were present. Kavak, who participated via video link from prison, denied the charges and requested acquittal, as did the other defendants.
The court found Kavak and four co-defendants guilty of "causing the death and injury of multiple people through gross negligence." It upheld Kavak's detention while sentencing two others, tried without detention, to 7 years and 6 months for the same charge.
Kavak is also facing trial for another collapsed building in the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, where 36 people lost their lives.
