Trial Begins for Two Accused of “Usurping” Former Greek Cypriot Properties in TRNC
The trial of two individuals accused of dealing in former Greek Cypriot properties in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) began yesterday at the Nicosia Greek Cypriot Criminal Court.
Ilona Lesko and Melinda Ladayi, two Hungarian nationals, were detained by Greek Cypriot authorities on charges of "usurping" such properties.
According to Politis, in its article titled "Usurpers’ Accounts Show €271,744… Two Hungarian Defendants Deny Charges", the lawyers for Lesko and Ladayi did not file preliminary objections, contrary to similar past cases.
Lesko and Ladayi are accused of collaborating with the company "Cyprus Constructions" to sell properties in housing developments built in Kyrenia and Famagusta. They face 63 charges, including “forming an organization to commit a crime, committing misdemeanors, fraudulent transactions on immovable property belonging to others, using land registered to someone else, fraud, and laundering proceeds of illegal activities.”
During yesterday’s hearing, it was alleged that the defendants had €271,744 in their bank accounts from "illegal activities," dating back to an unspecified time until September 26, 2024.
Lesko's lawyer, Rikkos Mappourides, requested her conditional release until the trial resumes on February 24, 2025. The court president is expected to rule on this request today.
The report also noted that Melinda Ladayi is being represented by lawyer Konstantinos Christoforou.
