Nearly 95% of Cypriots use the Internet Weekly, Survey Finds
Nearly 95 per cent of Cypriots use the internet at least once a week, with usage among young people aged 16 to 24 reaching an almost universal 99.9 per cent, according to data from the statistical service.
The 2024 survey on household use of information and communication technologies revealed that internet usage is consistently high across most demographics but decreases with age. While 99.9 per cent of individuals aged 16 to 24 are regular users, the figure drops to 83.3 per cent for those aged 55 to 74.
Among individuals with higher education, 99.6 per cent reported frequent use of the internet, compared to 76.8 per cent of those with lower levels of education.
The survey highlighted that the most popular online activity among Cypriots is texting through platforms such as Skype, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Viber. Internet calling is the second most common activity, followed closely by searching for information about products or services, which 94.3 per cent of users engage in.
Social networking remains highly popular, with 91.8 per cent of people participating in platforms like Facebook, while 91.3 per cent watch videos on sharing services. Approximately 10 per cent of respondents reported using the internet for educational purposes, including attending online classes or communicating with teachers.
Interaction with government services electronically is also on the rise. Between April 2023 and March 2024, 70.6 per cent of people aged 16 to 74 accessed information from government services online. Additionally, 54 per cent retrieved personal information stored by public authorities, while 22.8% accessed information from public databases.
The survey also revealed a significant increase in online shopping. In 2024, 63.6 per cent of respondents reported making purchases online, compared to 55.3 per cent in the previous year.
