Erhürman Criticizes Government: "Economic Policies Focus on Short-Term Gains"
Leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhürman, has strongly criticized the government’s economic policies, highlighting crises in the construction and industrial sectors. He accused the government of damaging the economy and reiterated his call for early elections.
"Repeating the Same Mistakes"
Speaking on Kanal Sim during an interview with Serhat İncirli, Erhürman stated, “If this mindset remains, the same mistakes will continue everywhere.”
He also argued that the Immovable Property Acquisition (Foreigners) Decree is unconstitutional, emphasizing that such regulations require proper legislative processes rather than being enforced through decrees.
Erhürman recalled that his party had long advocated for better regulation of property sales to foreigners. Highlighting the current crisis in the construction sector, he noted that monthly apartment sales had plummeted from 150 to just one unit within seven months.
"Policies Accelerate Wealth Redistribution"
Erhürman criticized the recent changes in regulations, pointing out that foreign investors, who were previously barred from holding even a 1% share in the construction sector, can now own up to 49%. He described this policy shift as detrimental, stating, “You are accelerating the redistribution of capital, achieving nothing else.”
He also expressed concerns over granting citizenship to foreign investors in the construction sector, arguing that such policies harm local businesses by fostering unfair competition.
"Industrial Sector Faces Unfair Competition"
Turning to the industrial sector, Erhürman questioned the government’s policy of treating local and Turkish investors equally, asking, “Can a local producer truly compete with a Turkish investor who produces for a population of 86 million and enjoys cost advantages?”
"Tourism and Higher Education Suffer Losses"
Erhürman claimed that revenue losses were evident in tourism and higher education. Outside of casino tourism, he argued, “Tourism is essentially dead.”
"Economic Collapse and Mistrust"
He accused the government of fostering distrust in the market, stating, “The insecurity they’ve created in the market cannot be repaired. Risk-tolerant buyers and investors might eye this place, but that’s all.”
Erhürman warned that dwindling purchasing power would lead to increased reliance on Southern Cyprus, further destabilizing the economy.
Early Election Call
Reiterating his call for early elections, Erhürman concluded, “The longer it takes for us to come to power, the bigger the mess we’ll inherit. Every calculation points toward collapse. They are being dragged, step by step, toward an early election.”
