Unficyp Peacekeeper Injured after Clash with Farmers
Greek Cypriot farmers on Friday clashed with Unficyp peacekeepers in Dherynia’s buffer zone area, which led to an altercation.
A UN vehicle was damaged and a peacekeeper was treated for a minor injury at the scene, according to Unficyp spokesman Aleem Siddique.
Famer Pashcalis Paschali claimed he had obtained a UN permit to farm land close to the ceasefire line. The UN, however, contradicted this saying no such permit was granted.
“Farming near the ceasefire lines inside the UN buffer zone is strictly prohibited and risks provoking tensions.
“No farmer is ever granted permission to work near the ceasefire lines, such actions jeopardise the safety and security of both civilians and UN peacekeepers.”
Paschalis claimed a meeting was held with peacekeepers in Pyla earlier in the week where all the necessary permits were obtained. On Friday morning however “we were blocked by 30 vehicles that wouldn’t let us farm the lands.”
Unficyp issued a statement stressing “we call on all farmers to comply with all UN rules and regulations for farming activities inside the buffer zone.
Our top priority remains to prevent tensions and maintain the status quo across the UN buffer zone.”
