Fatal Accident Suspect Remanded for 3 Days
Kemal Düzgün, the suspect in a fatal accident on the Nicosia-Omorfo main road, has been remanded in custody for 3 days. The incident, which resulted in the death of Hüseyin Ulu, occurred on the 2nd and 3rd kilometers of the road. The issue of inadequate lighting on the main road was also discussed in court.
The accident occurred on December 22, 2024, around 5:50 PM, when Düzgün, 33, was driving his vehicle, plate number VM 901, in the direction of Omorfo. As he reached the vicinity of İrmar Market in Gönyeli, he struck 58-year-old Hüseyin Ulu, who was crossing the road from the north to the south on foot. The police confirmed that Ulu died at the scene.
Police officer Ozan Avcı provided details in court, stating that the suspect had been arrested and an investigation was underway. The police also mentioned that they would check for available camera footage in the area and that both the suspect and the pedestrian would undergo blood tests for alcohol and drug use.
The officer revealed that the point of impact had been identified, but the suspect had not signed the sketch of the accident scene. The investigation is ongoing, with further statements to be taken. The police requested that Düzgün be remanded for three days.
The suspect's lawyer did not object to the remand but asked questions about the incident. The lawyer inquired whether there was a pedestrian crossing at the location of the accident. The police confirmed that the area was a main road, and no pedestrian crossing existed.
The lawyer also asked where the deceased had been on the road, and the police stated that the accident had occurred while Ulu was walking in the middle of the road.
Regarding the lighting on the road, the lawyer asked if there were any lights where the accident occurred. The police confirmed that the lights at the point of impact were not functioning, but there were working lights 50 meters away. The lawyer added that 10 streetlights in the area were out due to an electrical fault.
The police also noted that many students lived in the area, and the road was commonly used by pedestrians due to the presence of several busy markets.
Judge Nuray Necdet, considering the testimony, ordered that the suspect remain in custody for 3 days.
