Citizens Rally Outside Parliament Against Controversial Bill

The UBP-YDP-DP government’s decision to proceed with the Public Servants Amendment Bill—despite a general strike involving 33 unions—has once again driven union members and citizens to protest outside Parliament. Thousands gathered, chanting "Government, resign!" in response to the administration's actions.

The parliamentary committee met urgently to discuss the contentious bill, inviting union representatives despite the ongoing strike. This move fueled speculation that the government might impose a strike ban, particularly on Parliament workers.

Unions remain defiant, with leaders stating they will not back down, even if bans are enacted. They argue the proposed changes to the cost-of-living system would further erode citizens' purchasing power. In response, unions have declared an indefinite strike and protest campaign until the bill is withdrawn.

Protesters also criticized the government for increasing discretionary budgets, such as entertainment and construction projects, by over 200%, while targeting citizens' finances under the guise of "austerity."

The controversy escalated after Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and Finance Minister Özdemir Berova met with union representatives last week, stating they would "consider" their demands, only to fast-track the bill for committee review the following day.

Demonstrators vowed to intensify their struggle in solidarity with Parliament workers and to resist what they described as an attack on labor rights.
