Worn Euro Banknotes in TRNC May Be Withdrawn
The Bicommunal Technical Committee on Economic and Commercial Matters is exploring ways to legally withdraw worn euro banknotes accumulated in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and tackle environmental issues through new projects.
Manthos Mavrommatis, the Greek Cypriot co-chair of the committee, stated that efforts are underway to find methods for the withdrawal of these worn notes via the Central Bank of Cyprus. Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Mavrommatis emphasized the accumulation of significant quantities of damaged euro notes in the TRNC and the committee’s initiative to address this matter efficiently.
According to Haravgi, Mavrommatis also highlighted plans to include both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot companies in the proposed solar park project in the buffer zone, supported by the European Commission. Additionally, he discussed proposals to recycle waste electrical devices from the northern part of the island.
He noted that the committee previously suggested transferring such devices to recycling facilities in South Cyprus, given the absence of similar infrastructure in the TRNC. Mavrommatis believes this initiative would benefit both communities and help mitigate environmental damage caused by abandoned equipment, particularly along the Green Line.
