Military Agreement Between Cyprus and the US Finalized
The military agreement between Cyprus and the United States has been finalized, enabling Cyprus to procure defense equipment and services from the US.
According to an announcement from the White House late last night, the agreement formalizes discussions that began in October during the first Strategic Dialogue between the two parties.
Greek Cypriot media highlighted the significance of the agreement, noting that it provides Cyprus with access to US military equipment, including surplus defense materials, at reduced or no cost. Reports emphasized the historic importance of the deal, describing it as a milestone in the bilateral relationship.
One of President Joe Biden’s final acts in office was signing the executive order that ensures Cyprus can benefit from US defense materials and services. The agreement is seen as enhancing Cyprus’ defense capabilities while strengthening its strategic position as a key security partner in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Greek Cypriot media also underscored the broader geopolitical implications of the deal, stating that it reinforces Cyprus’ political stability, bolsters its international standing, and supports efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.
US Ambassador to Cyprus Julie D. Fisher welcomed the agreement, describing it as a significant step in strengthening security cooperation and advancing regional stability. Fisher also highlighted Cyprus’ role in facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza and emphasized the alignment of the agreement with longstanding US policies supporting a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue within a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation framework.
The agreement marks a new phase in Cyprus-US relations, underscoring the strategic and defense collaboration between the two countries.
