Traffic Fatalities Continue: Two Lives Lost in Boğazköy Crash
The tragedy of traffic fatalities in northern Cyprus persists. This morning in Boğazköy, a vehicle lost control and crashed into a tree, resulting in the deaths of the driver, 41-year-old Mehtap Kanal, and a 12-year-old passenger, Ecrin Başbınar.
According to the Police Press Office, the accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. when the vehicle, with license plate FH 800, was traveling north. The driver reportedly lost control due to carelessness, veering off the road and hitting a tree on the roadside. The impact caused the car to overturn onto its right side and collide with another tree, coming to a halt on its side.
Both Mehtap Kanal and Ecrin Başbınar suffered severe injuries and died at the scene of the crash.
Seven Deaths in One Week
Traffic-related deaths in northern Cyprus have been increasing alarmingly. In 2024, 50 fatalities were recorded, marking the highest number in the last 11 years. As of January 17, 2025, the death toll has already reached seven in just 17 days.
Notably, all seven fatal accidents occurred within the past week, raising further concern about road safety on the island.
