Tatar: "Discussed Haspolat and Akıncılar Crossing Points; Will Meet Again Before February 10"
President Ersin Tatar announced that he and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides discussed opening the Haspolat and Akıncılar-Limnia crossing points during their recent meeting. The topic will be revisited in their next meeting, he said.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Tatar highlighted that approximately 8 million crossings were made through the crossing points in 2024. He added that Christodoulides raised issues related to transit passages in Kokkina and Pyrgos, which will also be addressed in the next discussions.
Tatar emphasized the importance of resolving challenges to ensure smooth transitions for people living on both sides of the island. He noted that proposals were exchanged during the meeting, and progress will depend on mutual understanding.
He stressed that opening more crossing points would benefit residents in both Northern and Southern Cyprus.
Addressing Metehan Crossing Point Congestion
Tatar drew attention to the increasing congestion at the Metehan crossing point. "The traffic at the Metehan crossing point has been steadily rising, and once the new Presidential Complex, Parliament building, and National Park are operational, it will increase further. We must address this issue urgently," he said.
He pointed out that while the road on the Northern side has been expanded to three lanes, the Southern side remains a single lane with no efforts to widen it so far.
Next Meeting Planned Before February 10
Tatar mentioned that UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding Rosemary DiCarlo will visit Cyprus and meet with him in Northern Cyprus. Before her visit, Tatar and Christodoulides plan to hold another meeting before February 10, 2025.
Tatar also highlighted the need to resolve issues regarding Turkish-origin TRNC citizens facing restrictions on crossing to Southern Cyprus. "These obstacles must be overcome," he stated.
